The Horse That Could Not Lose
A great racetrack story from back in the '60s
In about 1966 a college buddy and myself went to Aqueduct. We handicapped a horse that ABSOLUTELY couldn't lose.
We pooled our money and placed a $50 Win bet on him.He was coming off 3 consecutive victories by wide margins. We had never been so confident about a racehorse.
Obviously others felt the same way, he was 2/5.
Coming into the stretch he was 10 lengths in front. We were walking to the windows, and then,as if in slow motion, the rest of the field was catching up with him.
Sadly, the horse snapped a bone in his foreleg and still managed to finish 3rd. Mike Sorrentino won the race on a $50 horse.
"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A LOCK" in horseracing..That race proved it to me. The horse was claimed for $35,000 before the race and the new owner ended up with a horse that had to be euthanized and he had to pick up the tab. That's Horse Racing.
Memorably,
Michael Todd
